Into the Wild Green
The Western Ghats, one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots, are home to countless waterfalls — many of which remain uncharted on tourist maps. Beyond the famous Dudhsagar, a network of cascades awaits those willing to venture off the beaten path. Here are three hidden gems we've discovered during our explorations.
1. Hivrem Waterfall, Valpoi
Tucked deep in the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, Hivrem is a two-tiered cascade surrounded by dense tropical forest. The trek to reach it is a gentle 3 km walk through bamboo groves and spice plantations. Best visited during September-November when the monsoon flow is still strong but the trails are dry enough to hike safely.
"The sound of Hivrem reaches you before the sight — a low, rhythmic thunder that builds with every step."
2. Bamanbudo Falls, Sanguem
A lesser-known cousin of Dudhsagar, Bamanbudo cascades down a rocky cliff face into a natural plunge pool. The journey involves a scenic drive through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary followed by a short downhill trail. Pack a picnic — you'll likely have the entire falls to yourself on a weekday.
3. Charavane Waterfall, Canacona
In South Goa's Canacona taluka, Charavane is a seasonal waterfall best experienced in the early post-monsoon months (October-November). The surrounding area is dotted with areca nut and cashew plantations, making the drive itself a visual treat. Local villagers can guide you to the best viewpoints.
Tips for Waterfall Treks
Wear sturdy shoes with good grip — rocks near waterfalls are always slippery. Carry drinking water, insect repellent, and a waterproof pouch for your phone. Always check local conditions before heading out, especially during monsoon season when trails can become impassable.
